Is pet insurance worth it for a puppy?
There’s a common misconception that you don’t need insurance for puppies like you do for older dogs. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Getting your puppy insured early can help you financially if the following issues arise:
Unexpected expenses
Accidents
Puppies are prone to accidents as they’re learning to walk and growing up. Pet insurance can help with the cost of vet bills should an injury need medical attention. You’ll also have liability cover in case your puppy damages anyone else's property.
Illness
Like human babies, puppies can pick up viruses, infections and illnesses at an alarming rate. Their immune system is still maturing, just like their personalities. For this reason you may need medication from the vet, which can be costly if you don’t have the relevant cover.
Comprehensive cover against
Hereditary and congenital conditions
These can be difficult to spot at birth and expensive to treat.
Dental illness and injury
Excluding routine check-ups, elective treatments, crowns and root canal procedures.
Behavioural treatment
If your dog needs to see a certified behavioural specialist for common problems like barking or chewing and you’re referred by your vet, you’re covered.
Peace of mind
Quality cover
Knowing you have quality cover lets you concentrate on enjoying your puppy - with the peace of mind of knowing you can cover the cost of any treatment they may need.
Free vet video calls, 24/7
The Agria app gives you free 24/7 access to expert advice from a qualified vet. Saving you time and money on unnecessary vet trips.
Lost or stolen pets
Up to £1,500 of help towards finding your puppy, including advertising and offering a reward.
What's not covered?
Cover for pre-existing conditions that started before your policy
Conditions that began or showed symptoms before your policy started are considered pre-existing. Conditions that arise after your policy exclusion period ends are covered as long as the policy remains active.
The cost of routine pet care, such as vaccinations and check-ups
But, if you choose our most extensive cover, we’ll give you a £25 voucher every year to help with the cost.
For further information please refer to the Policy Terms and Conditions booklet or if you are unsure whether your pet’s treatment will be covered please contact us.
How much does puppy insurance cost?
The average price for annual puppy insurance from Agria is £37 per month. This is based on all policies sold in 2023. It’s worth bearing in mind that Agria policies are lifetime policies, which are generally more expensive than other policies as they offer a higher level of cover.

Fantastic to deal with.
Had to move my Labrador puppy to another vets for a second opinion and further treatment. A stressful time but the second vets sorted out her problem and hopefully it is now resolved. As the claim starred in our initial vets and finished in our new one, I was unsure if Agria would count this as one claim or two. Both vets submitted the forms and Agria were fabulous, counting it as one claim so one excess plus 10% . Quick prompt pay out and emails. So glad we are with them. Complete peace of mind. Thank you

The insurance was reasonably priced and offered a good level of vet coverage. Newsletters with Information regularly sent in relation to the age of my puppy with tips which is useful especially if you haven’t got much experience of dog ownership .

Choosing and insurance is always a challenge.
Choosing an Insurance is always a challenge but for a pup even harder a he has become a family member and you want nothing but the best for him and for us to feel confident that the right help is there when we need it. Agria Pet Insurance was clear and informative and just what we wanted from an Insurance . It was easy to complete and very understandable not a load of gobbledegook. Thank you, I hope we never need you but feel happy in knowing if we do then you will be there.
