A Journey of Confidence, Connection, and Healing: Kitt’s Life-Changing Bond with their Borzoi, Starry

Kitt’s path to becoming a dog owner wasn’t straightforward—it was a journey of self-discovery, research, and finding the perfect match for their needs. Today, Kitt and their Borzoi, Starry, are an inseparable team.

For Kitt, growing up without dogs meant that they perhaps lacked the foundation to navigate struggles with anxiety, social situations, and their own identity. They rarely left the house, trapped in their inner world of self-doubt. But when the idea of getting a dog began to take shape, Kitt approached the decision with great caution, knowing that a dog would be a huge commitment but an important step in their journey.

The stereotype of an assistance dog is often a Labrador or Retriever—friendly, driven, and quick to learn, but Kitt knew that the breeds’ qualities might not align with their needs . After much deliberation, they turned their attention turned to sighthounds— known for their gentle nature, calm demeanour, and deep emotional intelligence.

Kitt discovered Borzois, a breed often seen as more ethereal and regal. Their cool, composed character offered Kitt the grounding they longed for to help ease anxiety. Cue Borzoi breeder Sarah White,    Agria Pet Insurance’s Breeder Channel Manager and her incredible Mischran Borzois. Sarah’s breeding philosophy focuses not just on winning shows but on creating dogs with purpose, dogs that are emotionally intelligent and perfect for a family environment.

Sarah and her mother have been breeding Borzois for over 30 years. As a member of the Borzoi Club UK, she was able to offer Kitt personal insights as both a breeder and an owner. She also directed Kitt to the Breed Club for additional support. Although there was a wait for puppies, timing worked out when a friend bred a litter from their lines.

When Kitt met Starry, it was a truly life-changing moment. Starry’s unique markings and presence instantly resonated with Kitt. “She’s emotionally the most intelligent, and we just clicked—it was like the missing piece of the puzzle in my life,” Kitt reflects. Since then, their bond has been nothing short of transformative.4

tarry has not only become a source of comfort and emotional support for Kitt, but also a key player in helping face challenges that once seemed insurmountable. When Kitt is struggling with anxiety, Starry intuitively knows when to comfort them—often by gently licking their hand or simply being by their side. On personal and work calls, when Kitt feels nervous, Starry has learned how to apply pressure to help them stay calm.

One of the things that makes Starry so special is her ability to understand boundaries. When Kitt is upset, Starry instinctively gives them space.

Starry also loves exercise, and running around outside with Kitt is an activity that brings them both immense joy. With Starry by their side, Kitt has gained the confidence to engage with the world, attend appointments, and take on new experiences that they would have previously avoided. Starry acts as a buffer in social situations, diverting attention away from Kitt but also drawing people in with her captivating charm.

While some places have been hesitant to grant Starry access due to her unconventional assistance breed, Kitt remains hopeful. “With increasing awareness of conditions like anxiety and autism, perception about assistance dogs is changing.”

Kitt is excited to enhance Starry’s training, with a focus on deep pressure techniques, which will help regulate their heart rate.
Though Starry excels as an assistance dog, she thrives with variety and purpose. Not only does she grace the show ring, but she also enjoys lure coursing. Kitt has found a welcoming and supportive community of breeders and show enthusiasts who are dedicated to their dogs’ well-being. “I’ve learned so much from the community,” says Kitt. “It’s not just about appearances—it’s about functionality and the passion for the breed’s health and enduring happiness.”

Having Starry has brought Kitt peace of mind, while the support from Agria’s five-week free insurance gave her confidence during the initial phase of dog ownership. “It was overwhelming, especially with little experience, but knowing that I could speak to someone for guidance helped ease my worries.” When they suspected that Starry wasn’t feeling 100% last year, Agria’s advice and support were invaluable, especially through the Agria App, which allows pet owners access to a qualified vet for advice.

“Starry is more than just my assistance dog—she’s my best friend, my family. I want to make sure that I’m there for her, just like she’s always there for me,” Kitt says. “With Starry, I’ve found the confidence I never thought possible.”

Kitt’s story highlights the profound impact that the right dog can have on someone’s life. It’s not just about finding the most trainable or the most affectionate dog—it’s about finding the one that understands you, that supports you, and helps you find the courage to face the world.

On the borzoi breed, Sarah White adds, “They are extremely loyal; once you are their human, that is it. I always say you do not choose a Borzoi; a Borzoi will choose you. Due to their sensitive and aloof nature, they are not suited to everyone; not everyone is a Borzoi person. If they don’t like a person, it’s very difficult to change their opinion! However, once you're theirs, that’s it.”
